looking for tools to do niche/market/keyword research

I have been slowly (emphasis) trying to build something online and eBay and have come to the conclusion that a BIG part of being successful is building a product/list that is related to finding the best "hungry" market and using the best "keywords" for people to find your products on eBay, website online, etc.
I am asking y'all experts and folks what are the best products and tools to help with research. There is a plethora of things, but I was curious what others could recommend that they have had success with.

I got a year subscription to Wordtracker which has been a life saver. I also use the Google keyword tool and traffic estimator.

I am not sure why I am going to do this cause a lot of "gurus" * would really grumble if they knew I was but here goes anyway.
A free tool that I use with great success is http://www.seodigger.com
Register and upgrade to premium. It's all free.
Saves me a ton of cash and importing is a breeze.
* gurus are the folks who sell you the junk info while keeping the best for their tight little group.
Brainstorm for profitable keywords
SEOBook and Wordtracker are excellent tools, but IMHO the most effective and comprehensive tool anywhere is the brainstorm tool included with Site Build It (SBI). It uses the Wordtracker database so there's no need to pay their $329 annual subscription, plus you get a some additional, highly useful tools to help you build a valuable master keyword list and nail down a truly profitable niche.
The brainstormer lets you generate and research hundreds of keywords and key phrases in minutes, and it gives you the actual demand, supply and profitability for each. Search both vertically and laterially and get a good mix of keywords related keywords. You can add or delete from your master list as you go and update it regularly.

Of course, the big problem
Of course, the big problem with KW research tools is everyone gets the same results. I've heard an argument from some of the 'gurus' that the best KW research tool is your brain. I don't agree 100% but it's an interesting point of view.

Everyone gets the same results if they put little effort into it. It's those who work harder and use creativity who get outstanding results.

Agreed. You'd have to be amazingly creative & knowledgeable to come up with as many results as the KW research tools do. It's what you do with the results that counts.
A combination of both
I like to start out with some creative brainstorming first by visualizing myself
in the searcher's shoes. This helps me get in the right frame of mind.
I ask myself, "If I was the person looking for X, what would I type, what do I want?"
This has helped me come up with great keywords that are outside the box and not the most obvious that sometimes tools miss.
After all the information you put IN affects what comes OUT.
Plus, I think, the more you train yourself to think as your potential prospect or customer
and see things from their perspective, the more your keyword research pays off.
After all, it's humans doing the searches, not computers.

I agree Ryan, sometimes it seems we get stuck in a rut of thinking the same way. I know when I ask my wife what she would search for, I usually end-up smacking myself in the head saying why didn't I think of that.

My most productive ppc campaign uses two keywords. Right out of my common ol' three pound brain. lol No research involved. Laughing all the way to the trout stream.

Am I wrong in wondering how many of us want not only a program that gives us the data behind the chosen keywords, but also a program that helps us to come up with keyword combinations too?
I don't know about anyone else on here, but I'm having a hard time looking "outside the box" for inspiration. Sometimes for me a square is really just a square and I can't figure out how to put "a new spin on it" and turn it into success.

Doing research on eBay
Since you mentioned eBay, you can try out a tool called Hammertap. You can find the key terms that convert into sales on eBay. From that, you can expand your keyword list using other keyword tools like Wordtracker, Nichebot,...etc.
