...but also want a visual environment to see your progress, I recommend WeBuilder 2007. It costs less than $40 and is amazingly feature rich for the price. Windows only, sorry Mac users!

Check it out ---> http://www.blumentals.net/webuilder/

Notepad++ Baby!

I personally use Notepad++ and love it. Though, it does not offer a GUI, but it is free...

Another great editor for beginners and professionals alike is the free Html Kit! It can be found at: http://htmlkit.com

Html Kit is feature rich and offers the ability to see in real time the changes you make to the markup in a split window.

Still, like kensav noted...there are many free editors out there. A few of these free editors, in my opinion, are better than those you pay hundreds for.

Im down with the PHP designer -- it does a nice job highlighting different sections of code so that you dont lose track of where you are...

PHP eclipse is also one that I like to use it is also a free application.

It may sound counterintuitive, but I like hand-coding in Dreamweaver. I find their syntax highlighting, bulk comments, and shortcuts to be real time savers.

When I need the power of a raw text editor I use Textpad.

Code Editors for Linux

kuproverto's picture

For [Linux] Ubuntu there are three main code editors. Screem, Bluefish and Quanta Plus. All are free, of course. I like Quanta Plus the most, it has great functionality especially with CSS and some WYSIWYG features also.
