PPC Spend vs. Bad Habits

Ryan's picture

Heard cigarettes in NYC may soon be going to $9 per pack. If that applies to anyone reading this post...

If you smoke a pack a day, that = $270 per month you COULD rather be investing into PPC spend. God love those in NYC smoking two packs per day ($540) - they could start a seriously profitable PPC business in only 30 days! =\

What's your habit(s) and how much could you save up at the end of the month?

One diet coke .65 per day = $19.50 per month
One Starbucks Pike Place @ $2 per day = $60

Adds up pretty quick!

Could curbing habits - build our businesses?

I think formulating plans as to exactly what we will do with the monies saved - down to the keywords were going to pay for - definitely could help curb some defeating habits and grow our affiliate businesses.

Also what bills do you have right now that you could sacrifice to grow your business? I don't have cable and therefore no t.v. bill. I save $60+ per month and put time into things that will invest back into my life.

p.s. there are a number of new websites offering cable tv shows online

Hey Ryan, I think you've hit it. Sacrifice is key! There's always an opportunity cost....

Hey guys -- I am with you on this one except that up here in Alberta Smokes have hit a sickening $12.50 a pack..

After learning about and getting involved in the affiliate business I have quit smoking (YAY) 12 days now -- cold turkey

If you are looking for extra money to put towards your affiliate business and you smoke -- NO BRAINER -- quit smoking and take out your aggression on PHP or HTML code... :P

Ryan's picture

And I though I was getting abused at the gas pump. Ouch - $12.50?! That is insane and likely to spark some serious political challenges I'm sure.

On the flip, Congrats on your 12 days!! That's awesome!

There is a good cessation forum on the about.com website that is pretty motivating and inspiring and may help in keeping focused. Whyquit.com is another site that will keep you going strong and very informative.

I was a little dumbfounded when I found out that:

A) nicotine is a Pesticide in its natural form.
B) there are over 3000 chemicals and additives in cigarettes (including the glue used to hold the rolled paper together)
C) one of the chemicals is amonia that was added to make the nicotine be absorbed into the bloodstream quicker
D) that RJ Reynolds died fairly young from cancer

Sorry if I have gone on a tangent here - I use to be a smoker so I can passionately identify with how hard it can be to quit.

Another motivator to keep going strong is the Quit Meter @ quitmeter.com ;)

Congrats on quitting. You get double-taxed on smoking. One hits your pocket book, the other hits your health. So you should notice some nice savings in both areas of your life ;)

This is one tough accomplishment. What are you using to help with the addiction? I have tried and tried, but I get unbelievably irritated at the smallest things. Any tips and or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yes I'm one of those idiots too. Been there done that. Didn't get the t-shirt, just more smokes :(. I'm using nicotine gum and Snus and find it's quite effective. Snus is a European tobacco product. It's ground tobacco with flavorings. It's sold mostly in a pouch. You don't chew it and you don't have to spit for the most part. You can find it by searching Google. I'm buying Metropol vit pepparmint at northerner.com. It's $4.00 per can & takes about 4 days to arrive. I plan on moving to gum exclusively at some point so I don't have a permanent tobacco use problem. Quitting is extremely difficult and most non-smokers don't understand why we don't just quit. Keep trying to quit!

Hi Chopper,

Hmm. Most former smokers understand how difficult it was to quit. However, with all due respect, we also know junkie-thinking when we see or hear it. Smoke by any name is still smoke. One must stop smoking, stop using nicotine, regardless of the delivery mechanism, to be smoke-free.

Thinking about not smoking -- and fearing it big time -- is harder than actually stopping. But the bottom line (as you know) is ... ya gotta quit to quit. Everything else is the nico-demon messing with your mind. He's winning. And laughing at you as you order more products worldwide that kill when consumed as recommended. That's deep.

I recommend About.com's stop smoking forum. The link is posted in this thread. You're so worth the smoke-free gift of your life.

I practice NOPE ... Not One Puff Ever!

Hi Matt,

As both Judith and I have stated the about.com cessation forum/program is amazingly helpful as a motivational tool and a network of personal support by members going through the exact same things.

I once heard a preacher known around the world say something to the effect: "You have to take aggressive action to destroy that which is trying to destroy you before it does." In other words - fight until you win. The only time you lose is when you give up fighting.

In addition to the forum mentioned... I visited Whyquit.com and saw the picture of the young child looking on as his father passed away from smoking right there in front of him. I immediately thought about my fiancee and my little girl and how that picture would look if that were me on that bed. Talk about motivating.

The irratibility lasts a lot longer than the nicotine cravings do. A method I used was the patch when I went to bed so I didn't wake up craving a smoke and nicorette gum throughout the day.

Without intentionally offending anyone of other faiths here - I also read in the Bible that we can release spiritual strongholds in our lives if we fast (go without food for a period of time) and pray which I did as well.

Knowing that I stand great chances to live longer to take care of my soon to be wife and child(ren) longer, knowing that I save about $100+ per month, knowing that I don't stink of smoke to others any more or have bad breath, knowing that my child (and other children) who learn from the example I model won't be learning to smoke from me, and knowing that I with the help of God have been able to destroy that which was trying so hard to destroy me for so long - was worth all the withdrawls and irratibility I had to walk through.

I will pray for you as many did for me and encourage you to take action. I'm living proof Matt that the cravings DO go away after 3-4 weeks once your body adjusts back to a normal non-nicotine dependent state.

I quit 5 years ago while lying in a hospital bed after a heart attack. Talk about a motivator! Trust me, it's much better to quit on your own before your health goes south.

Intellectually we know the facts. Smoking sucks. Smoking kills. Smoking is a real addiction.

And yet ... I smoked for years. I'm now 2.5 years smoke free, and it's the best two years of my life. I look at smokers huddled outside in the rain to take a puff, and I feel sorry for them. Most people want to be smoke free.

I quit cold turkey. However, the community support I found at About.com's Smoking Cessation Forum kept me sober long enough to make my quit stick. It was the best, most informative, 24-7 inspirational and motivational encouragement I've ever experienced.

Wanna quit? Wanna stay quit? Wanna save your cigarette money for affiliate marketing? Click http://quitsmoking.about.com/. It could save your life ... literally. Good luck to you! :)

I'm in Saskatchewan right now where cigs are about $13 a pack. I told my girlfriend's dad that (he's in North Carolina) and he balked, since he's a 4-pack-a-day guy. That's not a typo.

Anyway, being Canadian, I have no issue with cigarettes costing that much since I just filed my Canadian tax return and I know that a decent portion of that is going to the health care system that takes care of all those smokers.

Let them be taxed at the register, I say.

Mike

Ryan's picture

Hmm...

13 x 4 = $52

Let's say your girlfriend's dad quit and used the next $52 to buy a popular golf club on ebay:

Golf Clubs on eBay (for example only)

Maybe he could then resell the golf club(s) in local classifeds or online free local classifieds and make $25 - $50 profit. Even if he only made $5 dollar profit - it's still profit and just another small way one can help grow their affiliate business - buying and reselling things to generate revenue for PPC spend.

atomichomeboy....hope you're still hanging in there on quitting, but don't let it get you down if you've slipped back. I'm sure you've probably heard that it usually takes several attempts at quitting before it happens for good. I'm quit almost 5 years ago and loving it!

Like Ryan, I too visited "whyquit.com" and saw the pic of the youngster looking at dad laying there in the hospital bed. It's definitely an eye opener. I actually found that site "after" I quit and had gone on a crusade to help others quit. Even called and talked to the guy that started that site to get some advice and pointers for helping others. If you want to quit for good, thats one way to do it. Start volunteering your time to help others give up the habit!

Best of luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

Here is something else that will piss you off and possibly give you more motivation to quit. Not only did cigs kill the Marloboro Man, but

"smokers are not only inhaling toxic smoke but "regularly ingesting and inhaling non-degradable, toxin coated cellulose acetate fragments and carbon micro particles and possibly other components that are released from conventional cigarette filters during normal smoking." What's worse is tobacco companies have known about this for 40 years!" http://smokingcessationfacts.com/defective_filters.html

Read that again! Big money and corruption is the only reason big tobacco is allowed to kill thousands every year!

How corrupt and criminal is this! I have a 48 year old friend, of 44 years in the ground because he couldn't quit, left behind a wonderful 16 yr old son too.

Get mad, get your life back. You can do it!

Sorry for the rant, sort of.

Good Luck

Barry

Dear Smokers,

I'm piling on. Please forgive me ...

There are over 4,400 chemical ingredients in every cigarette you put to your lips and puff. From arsenic to prunes, you're the mad chemists' ultimate playground. That should piss you off.

Not One Puff Ever again.

To health,
