Micosoft & Yahoo merger

kuproverto's picture

What do you think will be the effect on Google if Microsoft and Yahoo agree and merge their search businesses? Personally, I don't think it'll have much affect as Google is much bigger than both of them put together. Google is, after all, now a verb!

In terms of market cap,

In terms of market cap, Microsoft is still the biggest lion in the pride, however, their search presence makes them look like a cub.

Don't count them out just yet. They have a ton of money and a huge weapons arsenal (the desktop).

I think Yahoo would be better off alone, but Microsoft needs traction in the online ad space, and acquiring Yahoo is the fastest way to get it.

The next two years are going to be interesting...

How will it impact the stocks (YHOO is go up, MSFT can go either way - although they are purchasing, many think this is a good thing for Microsoft. Now sure how it will impact GOOG.

Good for Microsoft bad for Yahoo

Linux and OS X have gained significant market share thanks to VISTA.

Microsoft is scrambling to put the pieces back together and acquiring Yahoo will help but it will not solve all the problems plaguing MS.

Yahoo lost it's mojo years ago and Google took it .... and ran with it. However, it will be sad to see Yahoo sellout to MS!

Not in the corporate world

"Linux and OS X have gained significant market share thanks to VISTA."

Unfortunately, this isn't the case in the corporate world where Micro$oft has the market pretty much to itself. They will, however, have to sort out the many problems with Vista before the corporate clients will move to it. Currently, even though XP is being shelved, business clients can still purchase it.

You're right - Microsoft is deeply entrenched in the corporate world.

I think MS realizes Vista is a bust. They're planning a new Windows release in 2010 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7.

By 2010 I intend to be completely Microsoft free!

I think Vista will be remembered as the new ME. What a disaster that OS was.

I believe the failure of VISTA will be a tipping point for both Linux and OS X.

Google's slap

kdpem's picture

Has been looked at by marketers as a very bad thing unless they always tried to make there sites fit into an easily searched data base. The fact that Google took the first step in making the net easily searched, as well as other ventures, the're the ones to copy in the world of search engines.
Being large because of design, is always better than being big because you bought into the game.

As long as Google keeps the best minds, I don't see them having to worry much about competition.
