breaking it down on paper

kensav's picture

I've never really broke down on paper what my strengths and weaknesses were. Also whether or not I would be able to plan, design, write, code and market a website that I create that is truly a unique sales offering to users. I've always thought that I had enough experience doing each phase of this but when I write it down on paper it makes me think more about each level of creation.

I wonder how much outsourcing and help other BIP members will need and if people realize that these are business decisions that will need to be made.

Hmm now I need to find a logo/graphic designer to give me that sharp look that's important.

A useful phrase

A phrase I always find useful is "Work on your business not in your business".

You know I like the idea of doing it yourself

I'm a hack designer, I know it and my html / css skills are only moderately good. But having to rely on only me for the last year has improved both tremendously and knowing that I can make something that while not as good as a pro, but is workable is awesome.

At some point after you have some successful sites, outsourcing becomes easy as you can afford it, but to start, learn the skills people, it can only help you in the long run.

Learn the Skills

I also agree that its very valuable to at least learn the basic skills. The more you know about what it takes to get something done the better you can negotiate if you decide to have it outsourced. Also, the more you know the less likely you are to ask for something to be done that might seem easy when you think about it but is actually quite difficult in reality. It just help s you be more realistic when you're talking with your programmers/designers.

This is what it's about

This is one of the reasons I've been looking forward to this project every since I heard about it.

My internet marketing training has come in pieces absorbed from info products, blogs and discussion forums.

What I've needed from the start is to work from the beginning to the completion of the project.

Taking a look at my strengths and weaknesses seems to make more sense when I'm looking at an entire process rather than, say, a PPC campaign for a crappy website with no call to action.

I think you take a much more realistic inventory of your skills when you know the whole plan depends on it to move forward. It's just too easy otherwise to say, "Oh yeah, I can do a logo if I have to" instead of seeing the impact it has on the overall picture.

Does this strike a chord with anybody?

Many of us have traveled the same road.. getting the info in bits and pieces and
not really Looking at the entire process from start to finish, or rather detail to detail.

Taking a look at the strengths and weaknesses of your website niche idea does make more sense..
the Black-Ink project rocks!

I disagree with the opinion

I disagree with the opinion of a few fellow BIP-ers that you need to get to a certain level of all aspects of this business. I think if you follow this route it will slow you down tremendously. The business of Aff Mktg is getting so complex and there are too many aspects involved that I would say that the person that will make the most money is the person that can organize best! In my opinion the person does not need to know anything of the technical aspects. It is like building a house, the people that earn the most money with real estate development are the people that know how to plan! Not the people that actually build the house!

Just my 2cents.

Perhaps we should create a

Perhaps we should create a team of people that think that they are good at a certain parts and come to a joined website ... would be fun to do. And of course we split the millions we make evenly :)

What do you think?
