how many newsletters did you UNsubscribe yourself off?

Submitted by DutchBIP on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 23:37.
Although it is 2am here in Europe I started immediately after the call with UNsubscribing myself from a whole bunch of time-suckers ... newsletters that I subscribed myself for in times that I was interested in that niche / area.
The counter is approx 40 Unsubscribed ... and this number will grow the coming weak(s) while receiving new ones that I forgot about.
I am still subscribed at at least 50 other newsletters. I would prefer an RSS but the niche I am in is not that techie yet, so for most a newsletter is already VERY sophisticated.
So I call it a night ... I am going to bed.
cheers
Richard

Removed some RSS feeds
Hurrah! Another European BIPer! ;)
I thought last night's session was really motivational.
It made me think about how I spend my time at the moment and where to spend my time and money in the future.
I've read the 4 Hour Work Week but haven't applied as many of the theories as I could have done. So just going through my RSS feeds in Google Reader and deleting the ones I just skim through each day and leaving the important ones. Will let you know how I get on Richard!
Also, really enjoyed your "don't buy ebooks" section Jeremy. When I first heard of affiliate marketing I found it difficult to find information online which didn't comprise of a 20,000 word sales page which told me all of the "benefits" of their e-book and how it was only $97 but worth over $497! You seem to be one of the few people to give solid information rather than regurgitated rubbish and major league hype!

It may sound crazy, but I'm
It may sound crazy, but I'm still subscribed to over a hundered easy.
BUT, here's what I did...
Rosalind Gardner started this.
She mentioned somewhere how EVERY merchant gets thier own email addy.
Then, if you stop promoting them, you just dump the email addy.
It also nails the source of the spam.
So I took it to the extreem ;-)
I started out with about 5 subscriptions per address,
and addresses like "spamcheck1" "spamcheck2" etc.
then moved them to "trusted1" etc.
But even with only 5 TRUSTED sources, I still got spam,
and didn't know who to blame.
So now...
EVERY guru newsletter has thier own email addy.
(email forwards actually)
"But that doesn't stop the overload", right?
They ALSO go to a dedicated "guru" account.
(called "IM Talk" actually.)
This gives me a database of email that I can SEARCH.
And find out who IS discussing what I NEED to know.
That's the point after all.
The marketers telling you that you need this or that.
And they make it sound SO logical.
:-pth!!!
Never even seeing the emails is great.
I don't feel like I'm missing anything.
And with almost all hosting now-a-days, email is unlimited.
If not, they give you plenty of room. (ie: 1000 email forwards is plenty)
And once you have it set up, it's EASY to maintain.
WHEN you need to know, THEN go find it.
Works great for me! :-)
Does that sound crazy or what?
LOL!!
Brad.
Not Crazy At All
Not long after I started in affiliate marketing, I signed up for every newsletter trying to learn as much as I could. Needless to say I was inundated with spam. So I closed that email account and started again, except this time I used a different email address for every newsletter. The only one that did not spam my email, sell or trade my email, or send me the "latest and greatest" opportunity was Jeremy. This is when I knew that Jeremy was trustworthy and who I would actually learn from.

Hi Brad, I did 2 things:
Hi Brad,
I did 2 things: (1) I unsubscribed myself from a whole bunch of newsletters and it really helps. Man I am getting hardly newsletters anymore as I unsubscribed especially from those newsletters that did not bring me much expect for an email per day :).
(2) as you do, I started to use one emailaddress per subscription, this way I can see if I get spam whose is selling my address.

me, too
I'm kinda playing catch up lol I'm downloading everything regarding this so I can have it to play back and look at later. Have only listened to a few sessions so far. One of my affiliate managers a while back suggested helping with time unsubscribing to a lot of newsletters. Have slowly been doin that for quite some time. lol I've had for quite some time my own little "Look at later" folder that just keeps gettin bigger and bigger. lol So...finally figured everything but about 5 or so are getting eliminated. Think I must've been into the thousands. lol
My logic tho if it will help any of you (not sure it will but sharing with you just in case) Figure if any of the newsletters, blogs, etc. have a web site....odds are they have an archive on that site of their past newsletters, blogs, etc. So....the sites are bein bookmarked and when I want or have time to visit, I will. Cutting back on being swamped by emails every single day is definitely worth it. Still get an awful lotta mail, but am slowly wading thru it. :)
"as you do, I started to use one emailaddress per subscription, this way I can see if I get spam whose is selling my address."
Very good idea:) I''ve also got too many email addresses, tho too. Takes a lot of time having to log into each account every day. lol :) Feels good tho cutting back on a lot of the email, tho and can see the light at the end of the tunnel. lol :)
Focus is everything
When I started, I read everything I could get my hands on (mostly RSS) to figure out how I wanted to approach my internet business. That very quickly descended into information overload.
Two things did shake out of that period that were extremely helpful:
1) I found Jeremy and his e-book
2) Some guru somewhere said that to be successful, you need to follow 1 guru :-)
As a result of this business discovery process, I filtered my core learning down to Jeremy with Amit Mehta's blog as a close second. Having Amit as an expert on BIP validated that as a solid 2nd choice.
For the 2 months of BIP, I'll read very little else. For me, it's all about execution and focus.
I think I started this
I think I started this process after I read Rosiland Gardner's book, which incidently lead me to info about Jeremy.
It's slow going, but wow...I was subscribed to more spam than I knew I had going. But it's been cleansing. I like it and I'm sticking with the advice.
I don't need shiney new syndrome while I'm trying to get my business off the ground ;)
Unsubscribed and Deleted
It was great getting rid of all that stuff. I unsubscribed, then did a search by sender name and deleted all the posts from that guru. If I hadn't read it, I knew I wasn't going to. I cleared my guru email by 3,000 pieces last night. I should be able to focus better now.
Best regards,
Judith

It's been a while I sent
It's been a while I auto-forwarded some "gurus" newsletters to deleted folder, instead of unsubscribing them.

One so far
I unsubscribed to one newsletter so far. It was not from a guru. It was a product I purchased a while ago. Every other day I get an eMail from them trying to see the same thing.
I am still unsubscribing me
I am still unsubscribing me from newsletters until today, and I must say it is a BIG TIMESAVER incredible. The number of emails that I receive daily dropped immensely.
When do I unsubscribe?
1) I went through my folder 'newsletters' (I created an email for when I subscribe to newsletters a long time ago), this way it is easy to move all emails that are directed to this email address into a separate folder. Anyway, I went through this folder and sorted it per 'sender' and looked first of all at all the 'unread' emails from specific senders. The majority is from senders that I am already subscribed to for a long time, but never read ... now it was time to unsubscribe!
2) Which so called 'gurus' do you get emails from ... the more 'gurus' you follow the more confused you can get ... so I decided to follow only a few and unsubscribed from the rest.
3) I looked at those emails that I get once in the so many days ... do I need them in the future? Create a separate folder, create a separate email address for that folder and have them moved from my inbox directly into that separate folder.
Result: after less than 1 week I have unsubscribed from about 50 - 75 newsletters (I lost count :)).
4) One other thing I did is move my 'newsletter email account' over to my gmail account, I added it as a separate account in Gmail. There were 2 advantages of doing this: a) gmail has a fantastic spam filter and b) I am not getting the newsletter related emails in Outlook anymore which distracts me less.
