Parents are allowed to make purchases for their students using their own credit cards. If you haven't already gone the whole business set up thing yet, or can't even afford a write off yet, and need to save a chunk of cash, check this site out.
They have a package deal for about $254 that includes Dreamweaver CS-3 + a 10 hour tutorial, letting you build a site from the blank page up. Don't know what FTP is? Forget about it, ya don't need it with DW CS-3.
What I personally like, is after investing a bit of time learning the basics, you can customize any template, as Jeremy mentioned and make it your own, with just basic knowledge. You are very limited in this regard with x-site pro (I could be mistaken here)
And who knows, your child may thank you one day for buying them such cool software...Get my drift?

When I bought my first
When I bought my first version of Dreamweaver I was enrolled up at the University of Utah. The education version saved me a ton of money.
Dreamweaver CS-3 $197.00
Wow, that's a great price - wish I could qualify for it.
Even though I consider myself a student - constantly studying online tutorials to learn more, and now a student of Jeremy's "university", I don't think these will fly.
Oh well, guess I'll have to pay the premium price, or upgrade my old version :-)
More Student Deals
Here is another excellent deal for students. You can get Microsoft Expression Studio FREE! All that is needed is to register with Journey Ed and once they verify your student status, you will get an email to download the software. You can also get Visual C, Visual Basic, Visual J and more. A little off topic...
A friend of mine is a journalist working in the tech field. He requests copies of software from various vendors to review for his blog or for freelance articles. It's amazing how much software he has been given!

Is there a difference
Is there a difference between the student version and the commercial version?

Only the price!
You don't have to be a student to qualify if you have kids in school!
They let me scan and e-mail my sons college id, then pay with my credit card.
A report card will sufice...no questions asked.
Why would you not want to buy your child software that will help them, once you figure out how to use it, then teach them IM.
Get my drift?

Great link, thanks! I have a new laptop on the way. I will fax over ID.
Is a Software Tool Needed?
I have a copy of Netfusion (is this a good program?) that came with my hosting service (netfirms). I admit I have had minimal luck with producing anything with it, but then I have zero html experience/knowledge (about 6 months of trial and error now).
The direction I ended up going was a Word Press site, which is free.
Are there other options out there to get this job done (and still look pro) for less or free? Or is there perhaps another option all together, such as farming the work out.
I suppose the question becomes;
What options can one pursue to develop their first website?
wordpress is better than netfusion
Now there is an opinion for you ..
But its true .. Wordpress has several significant advantages .. mainly being that its very optimized for seo ..
Here are some notes from an article that I was working on about ..

Wordpress - PROS vs CON
I agree, I must admit that I was always a bit sceptical about wordpress. Until I listened to an interview with Matt Cutts. If there are people that say 'who the heck is Matt Cutts' ... Matt is THE SEO guy working for Google that is 'the face of Google for the outside world'. You can search for his name in Google and find his blog, he also is using twitter since a few days.
Anyhow, Matt stated in that presentation that he LOVES wordpress as it is very easy to use and that it from a point of SEO is doing a very good job. This was enough for me.
The only thing that bothers me is the fact that WP has quite often upgrades. And sometimes these can cause issues with plugins etc. As I have not build a blog myself at all yet ... is there anybody here that can comment on this?
Thanks in advance

Wordpress upgrades
I've only had problems when I upgraded from a really old version (1.5) to the latest version (2.5). This was due to a change they made at version 2 with their URL rewriting code. It was an easy enough fix for someone technical, like myself, but agreed that it might be trickier if you don't have a programming background.
That said, I'd definitely advise you to use Wordpress for even static sites. The advantages definitely out way any problems you'd have with plugins not working. Plus the people who write most plugins keep them up to date with the latest versions. Wordpress doesn't change so often that it would be a problem.
Two of the major advantages that I've seen is the SEO friendly URLs and the ability to add new functionality via plugins. Although I'm not web programmer, I have been writing some Wordpress plugins to import affiliate datafeeds in order to see if I can do it. These sort of things will make your life easier versus hand coding a static HTML site.
I'm sure Jeremy will talk about Wordpress in one of the future BIP sessions and give us all his take on it.

wordpress updates
almost all of my sites use wordpress..
one with 1000 to 2000 visitors a day ..
you will need to keep wordpress updated per security problems.
I was infected with some malware per a security problem with version 2.32 .
so keeping wordpress upgraded is important ..
having a webhost with fantastico will make it easy or a wordpress plugin to help you update your site to keep it current

another really good for seo and very easy CMS is called CMS Made Simple
This is even easier than wordpress perhaps ..
wordpress ebook
For anyone wantign to get started using wordpress as a cms for niche websites. Caroline Middlebrook wrote an ebook which is easily found via google.
It outlines exactly how to go about installing wordpress and getting a niche site online. It's great for beginners but anyone who already has wordpress won;t find it very useful.
The only downside being it's full of her affiliate links, so unless you want to line her pockets, be careful with your clicking.
Time is never wasted when you're wasted all the time
I installed WordPress in less than 5 mins

Hi Dan,
Agree it is very easy to get the WP up and running, but than you have the standard one. Then it becomes a challenge, especially when you do it for the first time :). But I have made it my goal to get a WP site up and running in 2 weeks from now including a better theme.

Wordpress Forum and Tutorial Idea
Perhaps Jeremy or one of his other guests can do a tutorial video or online class that is "intermediate wordpress" for those who have gone through all the free stuff on the internet to set it up and have it running. There is a lot to learn about tweaking your template and the types of plugins and widgets that are helpful.
I think we should start a WP forum category!
Wordpress Video Series
I am working on a 8 part video series devoted to Wordpress covering installation to SEO. If there is any particular topic you would like covered, I would love your input.

NVU
Over the last 6 months, I've really started looking at open source products to fulfill any needs I might have. I just love it when I can find a product or program that is free!
So I recently searched for an open source WYSIWYG program that was more powerful than my aging copy of FrontPage, and I ran across http://nvudev.com/index.php. I've never really used Dreamweaver, so I don't know how it compares to NVU although the website touts it to "rival programs like FrontPage and Dreamweaver".
Download and give it a try if you're in the market. It won't hurt to give it a spin and see if it does what you need it to? The price is right ;)
Also...if you're looking for a program for creating or working with photos and images, try http://www.gimp.org/

Gimp is hard to learn
Tried Gimp- spent a lot of time online attempting to learn. ended up getting student copy of photoshop and downloading tuturials from itunes podcasts for free. better training material on line for PS
RJ
I don't claim to have used
I don't claim to have used GIMP a lot, but I have used it a couple of times...just to see how it compared with the copy of Corel Paint Shop Pro that I purchased a few years ago. I was actually pretty impressed with the features that it offered. I have not used Photoshop, so I can't offer a comparison there.
I would encourage anyone that is just starting out and strapped for cash, to take a look at the open source products. They can be a very good alternative to spending your hard earned dollars. Just because they are free, doesn't mean they aren't good. These products typically have a strong community following and forums available to get advice and help if you need it.
They're free...if you download them and don't like them...delete them off your system. Nothing lost but a little of your time. You might find that they give you exactly what you're looking for.
Most programs that you have to pay for, offer trial versions that you can download and use for 30 days. Take advantage of these see if you like what you see.
Best of luck!
Chris
My Web Host Has A Good Blog
Hello,
My Web host 1and1 provides a blog host that works good. It also provided to me several great software solutions for Web design and other things.

WYSIWYG
For those of you, who like me, would rather be shot than deal with programs like Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Expression, there are a couple of GREAT WYSIWIG site builders that do a great job for the non programmers and non web designers.
Coffee Cup HTML Editor:
www.coffeecup.com
Webeasy 7 Pro:
http://www.avanquest.com/USA/pc-tools/multimedia/web/Web_Easy_Professional_7.html
(these are NOT affil links)
Both $49.00 and both give you a free trial so you can try it out!
hmmm, to say that I rather
hmmm, to say that I rather would like to be shot than work with DW is not really true, but I do consider myself a real beginner with DW. I learned the basics a few years ago, just to be able to the first line of support (changing text, some pics etc) but no major things what so ever.
I have had a look at that DIY software as well, but I would like to emphasize that you have to be cautious using this kind of software. First of all, the coding is normally quite different from the standard html, therefore you can not upload it into DW whenever you want to. For example when you do decide to hire a webdesigner. Another thing is that there could be problem from a Search Engine Optimization point of view. When you get a bit more knowledge about SEO you want to be able to add certain things (titles, descriptions, alt text, etc etc) on your site. And not all programms give you this flexibility.
So I am not saying that this is not a good way to go, but be aware!
Another solution you could choose is going for Wordpress. I am in the learning process myself as we speak, but it seems quite easy to work with. There are a lot of (free) templates you can use for the look and feel of the site. There are even more templates that you can buy for under $100. WP is reknown for the fact that Google loves them, SEO wise there are little to no issues (and you do not need to know much about it).
Just my 2cents

Learning is easy if you just take the time
If you need to learn dreamweaver?
Discover the easiest way to use dreamweaver online at vtc.com and sign up it only like 20 bucks.
You will have access to all the dreamweaver online video tutorials as well as hundreds more program tutorials. Its easy to watch a video then go practice what you just watched. I have learned so much in a very short amount of time this way when needed for work or learning a new program. Hope this helps.
Not for commercial development???
What exactly does that mean? Can we or can't we use the student version of Dreamweaver for our affiliate marketing business?? I also see that you can get the Creative Suite bundles that come with Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, and other software. Are we going to need these other softwares in our AM business?

Hi ShirleyHere's the deal
Hi Shirley
Here's the deal -LOL.
> Can we or can't we use the student version of Dreamweaver for our affiliate marketing business??
Shirley, there is no difference what so ever in the student versions of these programs other than the price.
I started this thread after the first week of BIP sessions drew to a close.
My head was swimming with ideas, and one of my biggest obstacles has ALWAYS been cash flow. As a matter of fact, due to a family related choice I have made, I am barely keeping a roof over my head.
I am in no position to worry about tax write offs for certain items as of yet, and figured I was probably not the only one struggling involved in BIP.
I will not claim any software purchased via this method as a tax write-off, as a safety precaution, should I ever get audited.
I simply scanned and e-mailed my sons student ID to qualify for these great discounts. I have no problem doing this personally. If he was in grade school I would have done the same thing using his report card, but that's just me.
> I also see that you can get the Creative Suite bundles that come with Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, and other software. Are we going to need these other software's in our AM business?
This upcoming week at BIP appears to be all about site/landing page creation. You may just want to feel this week out before you make that decision.
One thing to keep in mind.
Dreamweaver and Photoshop are very powerful, and VERY intimidating programs to use and learn.
There are many free web design programs available. There are also just as many sites out there that look like crap thanks to these programs. Possibly due to the lack of good, understandable training in the basic use of the programs.
In the time you invest to learn enough to create a crappy looking site with one of these low end programs, you could have learned to open and edit a professionally designed css template.
Many of the professionally designed templates can't even be used with many of these free web design programs. (This i could be mistaken about)
infoz brings up a great point above - http://vtc.com/ - offers online training for a very reasonable price. Another one is - http://totaltraining.com/ - I personally have used the latter, and while I haven't even begun to fully understand Dreamweaver -CS3, I can now open and edit a pro. designed template. For now, that's all I need, as I want to be a successful affiliate marketer, not a web designer.
Just my opinion.
Good Luck
Barry

Thanks Barry
I wait and see what this week brings before buying the Creative Suite. I have children so I would have no problem justifying the purchase a student copy. I hear what you are saying though...regarding the tax write-off;) Thanks for getting the info out to the community.
BTW...I took a Dreamweaver training course through www.lynda.com. I actually learned enough to edit a site with their 7 day free trial pass. They have a $25 monthly fee if you want unlimited access. They have trainings for just about every software out there. You can also download a free 30 day trial of Dreamweaver at www.adobe.com.
