Blue Host

Mina's picture

I was checking out Blue Host as a possible host for my sites and saw that they have a special going. New Clients can get $50 free Yahoo Credits and $50 free Google credits. I haven't tried them before so I'm not sure how good they are. The reviews I have read have been favorable.

Does anyone here use them?

Never Used

I have never used BlueHost.com, but I am always uncomfortable signing up with a web host that requires 1 year or more prepaid or charges you an outrageous set up fee to go monthly. I have always used HostGator.com. You can pay monthly and yearly with no set up fee. I have never had any issues or problems with their service.

I was looking into host gator too. I didn't know about the prepaid for one year. Hostgator was my other option. I'm glad you had a great experience with it.

Blue host is the host

BradleyD.Haslam's picture

Blue host is the host Rosalind swears by.
So I know they are a quality host.
And I host with thier sister company, Hostmonster.
I'll swear by them both.

Hostgator has some mild costomer support issues,
if you research them in the hosting forums.
But it shouldn't be any big deal if you are a straight up client.

I have had 4 different hosts over the years.
I just let my account go at my 3rd, and dropped the 4th a couple of years ago.
So now I have 2.
And I am in the proccess of moving my MAIN sites over to hostmonster.
I am convinced, for shared hosting, that they can't be beat.

I have never been left waiting for support longer than a few minutes.
It's 24/7 phone support, plus a faq database, forum, live chat, and email.
They also just recently upgraded thier offer to unlimited everything.
And that puts them ahead of the crowd, as most won't do unlimited transfer yet.

Unlimited transfer IS something to consider now-a-days,
with the web going to video left and right.
So at minimum, that's a good reason to check them out.

I was doing a review site that compared several hosts.
And decided to put the review of hostmonster on my blog instead,
and drop the other reviews.
There is NO comparison in my mind, so that tells you how I feel.
(Wish I could hand you the url for the review. LOL! But PM me if you'd like to see it.)

Lastly, when I signed up,
they DID want you to pay at least quarterly.
I don't see that option on thier page now,
but if you called them, they might do it for you.
(It's about $25.00 every 3 months.)

If you DO sign up for a yearly package, (I reccommend it)
I'm sure they will honor thier guarentee if you aren't happy.

Hope it helps!
Let me know what you decide, K?
Brad.

Hello Everyone,

I'm the owner of hostgator and I just wanted to post that anyone that chooses us won't be disapointed. I'm involved in every aspect of the company, and if anyone ever has a problem regular support isn't solving I'll be happy to personally assist if you email me at brent@ hostgator.com

As far as the unlimited disk space and bandwidth goes any host that is offering 100's of gigs in bw and disk space is already offering unlimited. It's a big scam to trick people into signing up since sites will always go over a hosting companies TOS before they can ever use "unlimited". If you think I'm lying try uploading a 2,000 gigs to BH / HM and see what happens, or try using 10,000 gigs bandwidth. What unlimited really means it's unlimited until you start crashing the server. The only reason hostgator hasn't change from our basically unlimited numbers to the world unlimited is because we want to make sure the new staff is fully in place to handle the huge increase that comes from using the wording "unlimited".

I Recommend Hostgator

rayd8's picture

I currently use both Hostgator and Bluehost. I would highly recommend HostGator over BlueHost. I've noticed that my downtime for sites has been pretty non-existent with HostGator whereas with Bluehost I will have a site go down from time to time.

Also with Bluehost I have exceeded my bandwidth with a Wordpress site that got very large and they'll make your site unavailable for a few minutes if you do this. I discovered that my Wordpress Shortstat database got so large that every time I would query it that would exceed my bandwidth and the site would be temporarily disabled with Bluehost. I also discovered that this happened whenever I did a backup of my Wordpress MySQL database.

If this happens Bluehost is not very helpful - "it's your website, the script that is executing is written poorly so fix it" is their attitude. I optimized my databases as much as possible but this did not resolve the problem. So I contacted sales and explained the problem and asked to have my account upgraded for more bandwidth. "Sorry we don't do that" was the reply.

I finally ended up turning off Shortstat on the affected site and I'm basically screwed for a few minutes whenever I want to do a database backup. Bluehost is a good second choice and I will still use them because I learned early on in my affiliate career that putting all of your sites on one host can really screw you up if they go down but whenever I create a new site I always gravitate toward Hostgator.

hostgator or bluehost

gonker's picture

i have several sites on hostgator and have been happy

the only bad thing - in the TOS _ is that if you go over cpu usage - as in running cron jobs ..

Your databases can get shutdown .

User may not:
a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
b) Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.

I ran xml-sitemaps cron which used a lot of cpu - shut down all my websites for several hours. .

anyways I cant say about bluehost ..

I'm happy with bluehost

I personally have had no issues with Bluehost. In fast their customer service is really great. I'm not using a whole lot of bandwidth, but by the time that comes I will have progressed in business to get of of shared hosting and switched to a dedicated or virtual dedicated. Shared hosting is not for the serious business website.

Also, Bluehost gives you Cpanel11 which makes everything a breeze.

bluehost vs hostgator

Bob & Deb's picture

Mina,
I don't know if you're experienced at all with hosting websites, but as a semi-newbie, I tried bluehost AND hostgator awhile back and have tried 3 since, and came back to hostgator. I found the online and phone support difficult with bluehost, but hostgator has always been very patient and helpful (and their support isn't outsourced..). Since I've learned dreamweaver, I can now use hostgator's free templates, too. Jeremy recommended buying a template from Template Monster, and you can have as many as you need with your hostgator account.

If you do go with HG..buy from a friend's affiliate link ...it's $100 commission! (That's ok to say, right?)

...just my .2 cents worth...and trying not to just be a lurker..

Maybe wait for Jeremy's resource guide to come out so you can use his link to support the BIP tho ;) Hmmm.... maybe Hostgator is better, Bluehost only gives $65 in commission..

I have had nothing but great experiences with bluehost, the couple times I have called customer support, I never waited very long and they were always helpful and all around nice people, those who I have dealt with anyways. They do offer a coupon for adwords ($50) and ysm ($50) and msn adcenter ($75). They also offer a bunch of other things that I have found most helpful, like free web templates etc.

I signed on with bluehost because they were highly recommended by rosalind gardner. Im glad I did, I have 2 sites up with them and I would recommend them to anyone.

Hostgator Fan

My only hosting experience has been with Hostgator and I have to admit that I've been very happy with them. I've had several sites running with them for well over a year now and I don't recall ever having any major issues. I've read up a little on Bluehost and I'm sure they probably do a fine job as well. I purchase all my domains through GoDaddy and have been tempted to set up a hosting account with them for some sites...just as an alternate.

I would definitely encourage people to use Jeremy's links "when possible", in an effort to support BIP.

update on bluehost...

profwebs's picture

I haven't called them yet, but I just tried to do a "full backup" and it tells me my account is too big- You will need to delete some files first. I'm only using 5209.55 out of 307200 MB.

If they won't resolve this, this will be an big problem because it's a heck of a lot easier to do a full backup rather than backup email acct's, databases, home directories, etc all seperately.. I'm only hosting 3 sites so far too...

I had Blue host before I

AD_Mega's picture

I had Blue host before I moved to Westhost. I had to move from Bluehost because they told me my site was using too much cpu time. My site used datafeeds and I was importing the updated feeds every night. So if your site doesn't run a lot of php scripts and you don't use a lot of data feeds Blue host would be a good for you.
