Help with naming S-corp or LLC

bthurman's picture

Hello to all. I am really enjoying the BIP and am really excited about all the opportunities this is going to open up for us all.

Thank you so much Jeremy for giving of yourself to this degree.

My question is about naming a company. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to brainstorm to come up with ideas that would make a good name? After I decide on a series of names, where can I go to see if these names are already being used and not available?

Thanks for the help.

Bob

I can't really help with the ideas

But I can tell you how I search for "fictitious names" in my state. I go to this page: http://www.pa.gov/portal/server.pt?open=512&objID=3507&mode=2 and click on "corporation search".

So find your "state.gov" page and find "corporation search" or "business entity search" or something along those lines.

Also, for now, my "flip" business is just my business name on my bank acct.

I just thought of a couple ideas for names, in my case i don't like this option, but you can try your initials, i.e. BT marketing, or some combination of other letters in your name, this should at least get the brainstorming session rolling if you don't like your intitials in your fictitios name.

Talk to an accountant first. I am sure they would be able to help you with the process of setting up your name as well as determining what type of business entity you should register.

I could spend a whole

I could spend a whole session talking about branding and naming your company. I've had a lot of luck coming up with good names for my business adventures. I usually find inspiration in the most unlikely places.

Your company name doesn't have to be unique... you can name it after yourself "name enterprises" or "name affiliate co". The name you have on file with the state or federal government isn't important.

But I do recommend taking time to think of good names when you're building out your sites and web businesses. A memorable/brandable name can be a big advantage.

To check if your name/brand is available, run it through a trademark search -

I spent a great deal of time coming up with a name for my photography business. Make lists of every name you can think of that relates to the business. Show them to people who understand what you're doing or selling. Get their opinions. They may have suggestions and will tell you which they like. It turns out I came up with the name for my business after deciding on another name. Go figure.

Check this out as it will make you think creatively: http://www.dotomator.com/web20.html .

I had a lot of fun with naming. I'm looking forward to doing it for this new venture.

Here is how i chose my Company Name

Business4ProfitSystems's picture

My company name was easy to choose for my marketing business. I just took my last name (Amazan) and add the field that I was doing business in (marketing) add a E (just cause I taught it represent doing business online) and then combined the three to form..
Amazan Emarketing:

That's usually how I pick my business names for domain names that are not keyword specific . ie: cashoola .

Thanx
