Keywords Going Wide vs Going Deep

Submitted by infoz on Mon, 05/19/2008 - 05:03.
I need a little help here. I have read a few articles about this online and some info about this in Jeremys book and for some odd reason I just cant wrap my mind around this concept of going wide with your keywords vs going deep.
Can someone please give a very basic examples of going wide with keywords vs going deep?

Hi,
I found Amit's article explains the difference between going wide first and then deep clear and easy to understand. http://www.superaffiliatemindset.com/keyword-research-go-deep-or-going-w....
Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the article Judith
I have read that article before and studied it 3-4 times. Amit writes very good articles like that one. But I still dont get it.
I would really appreciate it if someone would respond to my question, I just need a really simple explanation so i can get it in my mind. Sorry if this seems so simple to some of you , usually I get things pretty quick.
I'll use Amit's example to try and explain it, infoz.
The wide keyword list is based around the general subject of malicious code detection and removal. That subject incorporates adware, browser hijackers, cookies, dialers, keyloggers, malware, spyware, toolbars, trojans, w32, worms etc.
The deep keyword list is focused around one particular term - in his example "spyware". All of the phrases on the deep list contain the main keyword "spyware".
Wide = general.
Deep = focused.
Thank you NickC , its makes lots more sense when explained that way, thank you so much for taking the time to help.
Here's how I usually think of it, and please correct me if I'm wrong. Wide keywords are just similar keywords and deep keywords are just a variation of that keyword.
Using car loans as an example
Wide
Florida car loans, Boston car loans, Texas car loans, New York car loans, Utah car loans
Deep
How do I apply for Texas car loans?, Can I apply for Texas car loans Online?, Texas car loans with no credit check, Car dealers that can help me get a car loan in Texas.
James
Actually wide would probably be more like this for car loans:
auto loans
automobile loans
truck loans
car loans
vehicle loans
etc.
Deep would be taking one of the keywords above and finding variations:
example for car loans:
cheap car loans
low rate car loans
chicago car loans
california car loans
Hope this helps.
Jeff
Thanks for the example; I've got a better understanding now. Based on your example, it looks like Wide is more about synonyms and Deep is more about adjectives, or maybe I’m over complicating it.
Thanks,
James
Yes going wide means finding synonyms or related keywords. Wordtracker has a tool where you can enter a keyword and it will give you up to 300 related keywords. You will find some really good ones that you didn't think of.
Going deep is just finding every variation of your root keyword.
Jeff
I wonder if there's a point where Wide and Deep overlap a little.
Amit's says he is able to generate a list of 30,000 broad, wide keywords and then uses Ad-Sage to remove ones with a low search volume. I've been able to generate massive keyword lists like this before, but it always combined wide and deep keywords.
Using the example above for wide keywords, there's only so many ways to say auto loan.
I would consider
delete adware
find adware
remove adware
deep keywords, because they're the same keyword with other words added in front of them.
it sounds like he's saying deep is more like long tail like
where can I find software to remove adware
is there free software for removing adware
James

Thanks for the info, I was still a little confused about the difference between deep and wide. My confusion was from how Amit had put words like find and delete in front of the keyword, which I've always associated with going deep. The list you've come up with is definitely what I would consider wide.
If you had
find auto loans
I would consider that deep, because find isn't a part of the original keyword and it's not a variation of the word car.
Thanks again for the info.
