Google Sponsored Links: Gauging Your competition

I've been trying to use google/sponsored links to gauge the competition of keywords I am interested in, but since they don't provide numbers ( just a box filled with green "paint") - I' d like to know when you guys can tell that there's too much competition for your keyword.

How many pages of sponsored links are a good indication that the competition might bet too stiff?

I don't know if that would be a fully accurate indication of competition on a keyword due to exact, phrase, & broad match types, bid amounts, daily budgets, etc. It may only be accurate for that particular search.

I think that the "green bars" may provide more accurate trends.

Any PPC experts here that can shed some light and correct me if I'm wrong?
