One piece of software I can recommend to get a SOLID business plan going is:

Business Plan Pro by Palo Alto Software
Also worth mentioning is the MARKETING PLAN PRO app as well, but not too closely related to the internet marketing that BIP dwells on.
HOPE THIS HELPS SOME SORT OUT A SOLID BUSINESS PLAN. :)

I'm still looking for an app i can run outside of vmware fusion on my mac that is similar to BPP.
Any suggestions would be nice.
This is kinda pricey for those of us just starting out. Is there a cheaper alternative. Maybe we can find an example on the web somewhere.
Business Plan Pro is definitely the best software for developing a business plan, but in my opinion it's like hitting a thumb tack into the wall with a sledge hammer. It will get the job done, but it might be a little more than you need ;)
I think they should come out with a lighter version for simpler business models.
Hi Jeremy,
My name is Cale Bruckner and I'm Senior VP of Product Development for Palo Alto Software. I wanted to jump in here and point out that Business Plan Pro 11.0 (released late in 2007) includes a new Simple Plan feature. The Simple Plan sports a one-worksheet financial plan and a set of top-level topics that's perfect for somebody that doesn't need a really detailed business plan to get started - less than 15 tasks required to complete this plan. Below is a link to a screenshot of the "Customize your document" screen in our Plan Setup wizard where you make the selection. If you need more detail later you can move up to the Standard or Detailed (Premier version) plan outline.

Hi Cale - thanks for the update on BPP. I haven't used the software in a while and didn't realize you had added that new feature. Have you ever thought about offering that scaled down feature as a stand alone product? You could even offer it as a free lead-gen tool... just a thought ;)
Best,
Jeremy
I have been a user of the paloalto software for a long time now. Still work with Business Plan Pro Premier 2007 will have to check out there latest offering to see the scaled down factor. I would highly recommend this software to anyone that needs a really tight business plan if they are seeking capital or anything like that. I can not comment on the scaled down part of it though as I have not yet seen it.
The Marketing Plan Pro is also software that I have used in the past and it is tremendous as well.
