Getting "Free" Content

Everyone doing AM these days says that you have to have fresh, new content on your site if you want to avoid getting slapped by google.
What are good places to look if you are looking for free articles that one can post on a website without having to go through the haassle of writing articles everyday?

Here are a couple of great
Here are a couple of great sources for free articles I've used on several occasions. I think I got them from Jeremy's book. These will give you good, free content for your website, but Google might penalize you for duplicate content.

Free Articles
Hi,
When you copy the free articles from these sites can you alter them in any way or do you have to copy them exactly as they are written.

When using content from free
When using content from free sites, just make sure you include the author's by-line and where you got the content from. Otherwise it's just plagiarism. I have used content from free sites in the past when creating simple tests and have always gotten good quality scores. However, if you find that the site/offer is working for you, then you want to get your own content. I have used eLance in the past for this. Purecontent.com is also another good resource for content creation.

Did you use the free content
Did you use the free content with the article by-line in organic listings or PPC too?
It would seem akward to have someone elses links included on a PPC campaign - better off rewriting your own content than paying to drive traffic to someone elses site.

Ryan, I used the free
Ryan,
I used the free content only on a test site to see if the niche was viable. My landing pages only had a small link at the bottom titled "Articles" which pointed to another page that listed all of the free content. The purpose was to test the niche and not get slapped by Google. I totally agree that you should have unique content on your site. On my real sites I always write original content my self or outsource it.

You could outsource articles
If articles are available for free online, thousands of people are using them. If you outsource articles, they are unique (which you can easily check by doing an exact match Google search).
If you're using a blog like
If you're using a blog like wordpress or blogger... you can get unique articles by using the unique article wizard plugin

The wordpress plugin works pretty sweet... it takes the category name as the keyword and gives you articles daily
I think Article Marketer has articles too but i haven't tried it.

Writing site like 99designs.com?
I was looking at elance.com. It looks like a good source for content. I was wondering if there's a site like 99designs.com where you could create a contest/project for 25 articles on super-duper widgets? The writers could bid and then you select the one you think will do the best job.

Posting a project on elance
Posting a project on elance is pretty much the same as creating a contest (although bidders might not see it that way!).
I've used elance extensively for content "rejuvenation". I typically get content from government sites and hire someone to re-word it (which obviously only works for some niches).
When using any freelance service (elance.com, guru.com, rentacoder.com, etc.) make sure you specify that bidders have an excellent grasp of the English language, and ask for writing samples. There are a lot of bidders on these sites for whom English is their second (or third) language, and their style of writing can be poor.

Good point. A language
Good point. A language barrier can create a lot of problems on complicated projects.
Personally, I use PLR
Personally, I use PLR articles that are distributed in limited quantities. That way, I do whatever I want to them to make them more unique and save me time, at the same time.
You have to spend a little, but it's well worth it, IMO.
