What to do with Ad and Social Script Tags?

Steve Patterson's picture

I was just listening to speeding up your site and I want to have ad scripts and social bookmarking scripts installed on my site but all that slows it down when it loads.

For instance Kontera, Amazon, SocialSpark, and Shopzilla all have javascript they need you to install for their functionality. Firefox handles this ok but at times is waiting for one of them. IE is terrible and doesn't load the page at all until all this stuff is ready.

What to do?

Google doesn't render JavaScript at all for SEO ranking purposes (so I've been told).

If this is also true when they measure load times, your load time, as far as Google is concerned, is the same as if you disabled JavaScript in your browser and loaded your site.

Of course, Google may just ignore JavaScript for SEO rankings but not for PPC load times...maybe somebody knows for sure? If this has been covered I sure missed it :)

It doesn't seem logical that they would do this though...

It's always best to place external Javascripts towards the bottom of the page so the majority of the content will load if the Javascript hangs.

*** Note - some scripts have to be placed within specific regions of your page to function correctly.
