I added a Forum to a site and had to remove it as I seemed to spend most of my time banning porn and pill merchants.
And this was after setting all recommended to cut down the rubbish.
Anybody else had this problem and discovered a solution other than employing someone to manage the forum?

These are problems that plague every forum. You can do things to mitigate the spam - e.g third party modules and captcha verification. Humans are probably the best spam detectors, but as you can imagine this is pretty labor intensive.
Our forums worth it? You bet! You just need to recognize the work involved in getting the forum off the ground. Once you have a large base of forum members the community becomes self-policing and will require less of your time.
Spam Plugin A must
I have just developed a Simple Machine Forum (the site linked above is my Word Press site). There are many plugins that can be installed for various purposes. I am pretty sure there is one for spam.
What I wonder is, these spams to people sites, do they actually work? It is such a nasty marketing method.
The trouble I am having with my forum is getting folks on there....I am continuing to populate with content to encourage interaction. I have just recovered from a COMPLETE system crash, HD, OS and all. So I will be jumping in and loading more content.
