Domain age benefit transferable?

Jeremy:

I noticed on twitter you have posted a couple times recently that you have purchased expired domains.

I'm aware that Google gives favor to older domains in a given niche. When you purchase an expired domain does the age of the domain remain the same to Google or does the clock start over when you transfer it to say Godaddy?

Here is some info that might shed some light on this....

I think if the content of the site has not changed as well as the ownership then you will be ok.

Great links Dan. The process of buying expired domains is somewhat nuanced. Some SEO's don't even change the WHOIS data for fear that Google will recognize the transfer.

I don't pay that much attention to it. If it's a good domain I buy it and build it out, and don't pay much attention to the domain age factors - maybe that's a mistake?

I have to say in the projects I've been a part of, domain age has made ranking organically MUCH easier with domains 6+ years old. I bought a site from a lady who hadn't updated in a few years and offered her $200 for her site. I did change whois but all the backlinks from her photos made it worthwhile and I think that was 8 years old.

My own personal site is 10+ years old now and I've owned it the whole time. Any thing I write about now ranks very well the same day. With a little linkbuilding it remains first page for months/years.

So I would say buying a site with age is benefitual IF you capitalize on it.
