Is there a reason NOT to put Long Tail keywords into an Adgroup initially?

I've found a process where it is relatively easy for me to add Long Tail keywords while I'm going wide. (basically I can do both at the same time)

Are there any negative consequences?

Maybe because of this...

In Amit's webinar, he mentioned that Google doesn't like a brand new campaign with a huge amount of keywords. If you initially put in your long-tail keywords, you could end up with a very large keyword list very fast.

Amit mentioned that after around 2 weeks it is safe to expand your keyword list.

This might be a good reason to keep the long tails out initially...

I think it relates to quality score. The longtail keyword can be a great benefit but it is better to wait to expand your campaign with these. The first two weeks should be used for your highly targeted keywords to help build quality score. After that as your campaigns are running well and cheaper...then you can use quality longtail keywords that focus on a consumer that is in the buying state of mind.

I agree with it relating to QS, having been recently slapped, it is definitely best to start with one or two keywords and build from there. I started with a list of about 15 or 20 of what I considered to be highly related keywords, Google did not like it. It didn't wait at all, it automatically deactivated everything and raised bids to $10. It was really frustrating but I guess at least I can say I've been there. :)

I'd definitely take it easy with the number of keywords you start with, unfortunately you have to tip toe around in adwords when you're just getting started. I'm taking the recommended approach from the bonus sessions on ppc mastery where you want to start with more ad groups and fewer keywords.
