Guide to writing an autoresponder series?

I'm setting up a PPC campaign and will be driving traffic to a landing page with an email opt-in form.

The PPC campaign will advertise a free e-course to learn about a particular topic (which I will set up as an autoresponder series), and the e-course will culminate in (surprise!) a pitch to buy a product.

My question is: what content do I provide through the e-course? I know the obvious answer is "write what your audience is interested in learning", but I'm wondering if there are any guidelines on how to build up desire through an autoresponder series.
