Display URL

webclay's picture

Hey folks, got a question about the destination field in the adwords tool. I am currently reading the "Perry Marshall ultimate guide to google adwords" and he says that the display URL should be valid. But what if I'm doing direct linking with the destination URL directly to the merchant's landingpage? Does my display URL has to exists (a real html site there) or can this be a fantasy url?

Good question WebClay

First, I think a few definitions might help... Keep in mind that these are my own definitions. Google refers to them differently, but for the purpose of this post, I think my definitions will help you understand the process better.

1 - Display URL = the URL that appears in your ad copy. The top level domain from the Final Destination URL (see #3) must match the top level domain from your Display URL. The subdomain and subdirectory do not need to match - just the top level domain.

2 - Tracking URL =the URL assigned to your ad or keyword for tracking purposes. The top level domain of your tracking URL does not need to match the Display URL or the Final Destination URL

***************
IMPORTANT NOTE
Google calls the Tracking URL a "Destination URL", but I think Tracking URL is more accurate
***************

3 - Final Destination URL = The final destination site that the customer arrives after clicking on your Tracking URL.

For people who don't use Tracking URL's, the Final Destination URL and Google's Destination URL may be considered the same thing.

PPC Advertisers that direct link or use a separate domain for PPC tracking will often have a different top level domain for their Tracking URL (#2). Using a Tracking URL with a different domain is fine with Google. They just want to make sure that your Display URL and Final Destination URL match - so the customer doesn't get surprised.

Let me know if that makes sense.

Thanks a lot Jeremy, I guess I have to read that a couple of times once its a bit colder in my room ;) I will give you back my thoughts as soon as possible. Many thanks for taking your mind on this :)

If you are direct linking to

If you are direct linking to say www.buy.com your display url MUST be www.buy.com. Your tracking url can be the affiliate link from cj. But as by clicking on the ad, it finally goes to buy.com, it is fine with google.

You can't have www.yourdomain.com as the display url, but then direct link to buy.com. Your ad will be shut down by google.

perfect!

Thanks for this explanation, exactly what I thought.
