Being a software reseller vs. an affiliate?

Hi folks,
Newbie here, just starting to explore and find my first niche. I want to promote one of my favorite software products, but the company does not offer an affiliate program - they only want to partner with resellers.
Can anyone comment on what kind of extra work would be involved in creating a site designed for direct sales rather than just affiliate referrals? I assume I would need my own shopping cart and payment processing capabilities, but wouldn't the rest of the site be built and marketed in the same ways as an affiliate site would?

I'm not too familiar with how being a reseller works, but I would think they might be able to offer you some code to put into your website so you could use their shopping cart system. If not, you might want to check out this company https://www.ecartsoft.com (Not an affiliate link). Their website looks pretty bad, but my wife uses this for her company and they have a great inventory management system. If you won't actually have an inventory and will instead have a drop ship situation, that company might be a little of an overkill.

In the past I explored the possibility of being a reseller for a major computer hardware/software company in the UK. Before they'd accept my application I had to show proof that my company would be able to sell a minimum number of units and generate a minimum revenue per month (I've forgotten the actual amount but it was around $12,000 equivalent).
Therefore, I'd recommend investigating being a reseller further but bear in mind being an affiliate is much easier and cheaper.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I will just try to find a more affiliate-friendly product to promote for my first campaign and maybe revisit the reseller model once I have some experience under my belt.
