Shopping Cart Info.

A friend is in the process of setting up a shopping site using something called http://www.shopsite.com/
Her site not very attractive, she admits it, but she is still slowly uploading her products.
Her husband is a rock-n-roll legend from the late 70's and is still kicki'n it today. (I swear I'm not making this up)
Point being, she plans on using a huge e-mail - fan based- list to drive traffic to a site that if properly set up could be BIG do to the exclusive merchandise they have access to.
I can work with and modify templates already set up for shopping carts, but have never installed a cart on a site before.
Where could I find some no BS info on carts, other than the merchants themselves? By googling, I'm not sure what the best info. is.
Are they hard to set up, which software is the easiest and most reliable?

In the past I've used both osCommerce and ZenCart (which is based on osCommerce). Both are opensource and there are many templates available. If you have cPanel, they are both in Fantastico.
