Questions from a New Learner

Hello,
I understand the concept of building a website with highly profitable keywords and quality content.
What I don't really understand is the relationship between building a content rich website and also creating advertising campaigns.
Why am I doing both? Am I learning two separate business concepts?
I understand the idea of creating affiliate links with merchants for products I recommend or review on my site.
But why would I spend money on advertising with Google Adwords and such? If my site is content rich and relevant, and I use Adsense, wouldn't I be attracting traffic for free?
How is building a website with affiliate links different from writing ads and using Adwords?
My apologies if this sounds really dumb...I'm new here.
Thanks,
Erika

To generate more traffic and
To generate more traffic and as a result more aff income.
And you may have the wrong idea about Adsense. Adsense doesn't bring you more traffic. Adsense only monetizes the traffic you have. And it takes your traffic away from your site to other sites for a small clicking fee that google pays you.
Re: Questions from a New Learner
AdWords: Ads you place and pay for on Google. When someone clicks on your Ads they are sent to your website and you pay for each click.
AdSense: Ads you place on your web site that are delivered by Google. When someone clicks on these Ads they are directed away from your site and you get paid for each click.
A content rich site will always rank better on Google then just a single web site with affiliate links. This is because Google ranks content rich sites higher because they provide visitors with a much better experience than just a single landing page with a bunch of affiliate links.
If you want to drive traffic to your site, then make sure it is content rich with relevant content.
Until your site gets ranked by Google you should consider an AdWords campaign to drive traffic to your site.
Hope that helps.
