Found my niche but confused about how to do niche research

Hi, now I have a niche idea, the next step would be determining the market for that niche so I will have an idea if this is a profitable niche.
So, I went to Google Keywords Tool and type in my niche keyword. The approx search volume for June is 246,000. But this number means nothing to me. I still don't know this is a high demanding niche or not.
Then I type my niche keyword in google search with quotation mark. It returned 3,230,000 results. Does this number tell me anything?
How do I put those two number together to have a clear view about the niche's demand and supply? Is there any tools that I overlooked? Or more research is needed?
One more question, is it possible to do keyword research without wordtracker?

Without knowing what the niche is, it's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string :) For example, if your niche is something that would sell better during the winter, 246,000 searches in the summer might be good.
"Then I type my niche keyword in google search with quotation mark. It returned 3,230,000 results. Does this number tell me anything?"
It tells you that 3,230,000 people searched for that exact phrase. You should also look to see how many people are advertising on the results pages.
"One more question, is it possible to do keyword research without wordtracker?"
Yes, there are several keyword research tools available some paid and others free. Wordtracker is widely thought to be one of the best however.

1.
If you are searching wide, i.e. as many as relevant keywords as possible, it is best to use wordtracker.
2.
From there, expanding each of these seed keywords into small group of keywords tightly related to these seed keywords, I think google keywords tool is enough.

I put together a guide with an example that tells step by step how to do the research and compare. It's on my forum somewhere but I don't want to keep linking out out and it's too long with too many BB code links to repost here.
BUT for your particular example and IF YOU ARE A NEWBIE, which I assume you are - it sounds WAY too competitive.
Couple quick tips. When you check for competition in Google use allintitle: "key phase in quotes" That will tell you how many are truly competing for that phrase - or at least how many have the KW in the title and are therefore actually optimized for the phrase.
If the phrase has 246,000 searches then what I would do is, use the free word tracker or the Google Adwords KW tool. Plug in your root KW, but scroll down quite a ways to find some longer tail phrases. Pick a few you think sound good. Then go back & forth between Wordtracker volum and Google allintitle: til you find the one with the most popularity/lowest competition.
Hope this helps and best of luck!
