Testing A Niche: Natural SEO vs. Paid Search

Hi Everyone / Jeremy,
Question about the niche development phase of the process.
In your presentation (great by the way) I'm getting that you:
- 1. Find a niche
- 2. Make sure it passes the basic criteria and SWOT analysis
- 3. Test it by direct linking to merchants using PPC
Questions:
What are your thoughts on testing a niche with natural SEO via free blogs that rank well?
Did you say that if after 100 hits to the product site you have no sales you may need to move on?
thanks,
wave

Via Seo in the form of blogs, ezine articles, is called Bum Marketing.
This is a very time consuming and intense process. You need a lot of focus for generating unique relevant content (even if you're super familiar with the niche) , generating relevant links, etc. You may as well reserve this effort for building out a site/blog around your niche when you already have a list of converting keywords and other conversion data.
I don't think there's any hard and fast rule on Hits vs sales to determine a viable niche. It really depends on the niche, your understanding of what buyers are looking for, and your direct linking campaign effort.
If you half ass your campaigns you may never find a viable niche.
If you construct your campaigns properly and have a plan for split-testing ads and continued campaign tweaking you can turn a niche you're initially unfamiliar with into several viable campaigns that are worth building blog/sites around.
