beginner needs help with website

Hello, I'm a 22 y/o who has just finished studying and want to set up a successful affiliate programme. My website is www.mytravelsense.com
I have placed many links on the site figuring that the more links there are, the bigger the chance of sales and more comissions for me. This was not at all successful and I will now remove most of the links and onl keep those advertisers which have a high click through rate.
Okay so I'm here because I have no idea which business model to use for my site. Currently I am using ppc advertising but this is costing me a lot of money and I am not very succesful at getting visitors to click. In short, I need a cheaper way to get visitors to my site and I need a way to increase the number of visitors that click on the links on the site. As you've probably realised I am a complete beginner and need all the help I can get.
The problem with the advice I have recieved so far is that it has been very vague and I have no idea how to apply this advice to my own travel website.
Any help recieved will be greatly appreciated.

Have you read the free ebook yet (High Powered Affiliate Marketing) or joined the Black Ink Project (theblackinkproject.com)? Plenty of very detailed advice in both to set you on the right track.
I agree with JerseyGirl. Read HPAM (http://www.quityourdayjob.com/learning) then join the BIP (http://theblackinkproject.com) and watch the many screencasts available.

Have you tried to do any article marketing - its a great way to get your keywords out there and there are several programs that I've used to make it really easy to get out to thousands of directories at once. The program that was the easiest to use and I got almost immediate response (web page quickly moved up in Google) was Article Leverage.com
