Avoding Link Penalties

Jeremy Palmer's picture

I found a good thread on avoiding link penalites on Webmaster World this weekend.

I think people spend a lot of time focusing on the number of links, and not nearly enough time working to build quality links:

In the world of links - quality is more important than quantity.

Links, Links and Damn Links

Jeremy, Went to WWW and read the threads on Links. My question (s)
are these. I read that the SE are moving away slightly from evaluating
links quite as much as in they have in the past past, true ?

Also some people think that inbound and out bound links some what cancel links out as far as value.?

If you are involved with Adwords for your traffic do you need links at all?

Would love to read your take on these questions. Thanks Pogo

I can't answer this question with 100% certainty because SEO is nothing more than theory and observation (unless you work at Google). However, my observation has been that links are as important today as they were yesterday, and will probably be as important tomorrow.

Search engines are paying less attention to the volume of links, however, quality links from authority sites are still the most important ranking criteria.

I think this is often the case. If site A votes for site B, that's one vote for site B. However, if site B also votes for site A, then the citation has less credibility in Google's eyes.

However, there are some exceptions to this. For example, if Adobe (PR10) linked to an article on your site and you linked back to them, you would still get a huge lift from having an authority site linking to you. In Google's eyes (for lack of a better analogy), Amazon has 10 votes because their site has so much authority, so even if you cancel out 1 vote by linking back to them, you would still be getting 9 votes from Amazon.

Now keep in mind this isn't a hard and fast rule about a site's PR, I'm simply using this as an example so you can understand how valuable getting links form authority sites is.

AdWords/Paid Search and Google/Organic Search are completely independent of each other. They both exist in their own vacuums.

Jeremy

Hi

Can I pitch in with additional relevant questions here:

So, even if the authority site has nothing to do with your sites subject is it still useful?

For example: My website is about 'monkey bicycles' and I manage to get a link from an Authority site(e.g.Adobe) then my 'monkey bicycle' site will benefit with increased PR? Or are there still associated rules with these High Authority site links?

Are news sites like bbc.co.uk considered as authority sites and is there a list of 'known' authority sites apart from '.edu' and '.gov'?

Thanks

A relevant topical link from an authority site would be best, but a link from any authority site can give your site a nice lift.

This is true. I've completely changed the website I had on one domain (even the language), and one year later it still ranked second for a keyword that was not present anymore in its content, but only in the anchored links I've gathered in the past.
