Google puts SEO's on notice about buying links and link baiting. They claim in the article that they've refined their link popularity algorithm to discount links that they deem unnatural.
In my opinion, if you're going to buy links you should NEVER use a text link broker like Text Link Ads or Text Link Brokers. Both of these companies have a large inventory of sites that sell links. Google knows about these services and the sites that participate.
If you're going to buy links do one-off link buys with topical sites that are known for quality. If you buy a bunch of links from sites known to sell links your link reputation could be hurt.

Very interesting. I never bought links, but I understand that buying links via Tex Links Ads can be some what expensive. Personally I would rather spend it on a good Press Release.
Do you think Google will consider "unnatural" increase of link popularity from article marketing? And for that matter from Press Releases?

Hi Jeremy,
This article refers to Matt Cutts blog: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-advice-linkbait-and-linkbaiting/
It seams that he does not think that "link-baiting" is such a bad idea.

Yeah, that struck me too Jeremy - link baiting can be just putting up some really great content. You get Dugg/slashdotted/red/shouted and then suddenly everyone is linking to you.
I wonder if that actually penalises you these days!?! It would seem a little silly if so.
