Freedom from search engines

I came across this article while reading Jackob Nielsen's latest Alertbox message. It's pretty basic in its recommendations, but I thought I'd post it regardless (for the newbies - like me).

Note his reference to the effectiveness of "affiliate programs".

Great read - thanks for posting it. I think Jakob had some good insights regarding the role of search engines and content creators. He also had some great suggestions for keeping the visitors beyond the initial "impression".

Good find.

Trying to avoid search engine game

I'm trying to build long term value by building sites that people will visit many times.

This is why I've tried to stay away from the click arbritage game.

I always felt that it was a one and done game with little long-term value being built.

I'm now creating social networking sites to build communities around specific niches.

I have all sorts of viral tools built into the sites. Also trying to build lots of content to get free search traffic.

As the communities grow, the profits will not be reliant on my ability to buy traffic into a specific page at a specific price. I consider this a business model that will be free from the ups and downs of the PPC game.

Thanks for the article link! As a newbie, it gave me a fuller perspective on the value of email marketing, developing a site users want to return to, etc.

Best,
Abigail
